Volunteer work in Leh

In july 2014 I spent a month with the NGO Leh Flood Relief. With two other girls we helped the kids with their homework, taught them English and did sports, games and other fun activities.

Tutoring

This picture was taken in the summer of 2013. It shows the tutoring class of Leh Flood Relief Project on a sunny afternoon in July.

At home

This picture was taken in the garden of his house with his sister, brother and a friend. The house has been provided to the family by the government, as the family was relocated after the 2010 flood destroyed all the family owned.

Solar Colony

This is the street in Solar Colony where Jigmet Lives. Solar colony is a village with government houses, where people who were struck by the 2010 flood have been relocated to.

The bathroom

This is where Jigmet's family lives. The small building is the bathroom, which is located outside the house. Imagine having to go out to pee in the middle of winter, when temperatures go down to minus 20!

In Jigmet's street

This is where Jigmet lives. All houses are the same, as they have been provided to the people by the government after the 2010 flood. One can see how dry and dusty it is.

This is the town where Jigmet Lives. 8 km from Leh, the main town of Ladakh.

Right hand

One of the main aims of Jigmet's treatment is to improve the functionality of his right hand.

Biking at the hospital

Sometimes (during school holidays) Jigmet can exercise at the clinic in the hospital. Here there is other equipment available for training.

Training the quads. One can see how difficult it still is for Jigmet to keep his right knee straight. His posture and strength have already improved a lot, but there is still much work to be done!

Winner

Jigmet couldn't be happier with his cricket bat. He likes to act and pretends to be a famous cricket player who just scored a lot of points.

Guinness World Record

In the summer of 2014 I gave Jigmet a new cricket bat for his 14th birthday. He was delighted and could not stop breaking records keeping the ball in the air.

With his new cricket ball he is able to do functional exercises for his right hand, such as holding, throwing and catching the ball.

New school shoes

Hiking boots 2013

In 2013 we bought Jigmet 2 good pairs of shoes. One for at home and black shoes for school. He was given insoles to correct for the limb length difference and stabilise his pelvis.
